For more than twenty-five years, I have traced my Plunkett, Dowling, and Marcisak ancestors through census records, death certificates, and newspaper notices. I found them on Find a Grave, built virtual cemeteries, and confirmed plot numbers. But not one of my Plunkett or Dowling ancestors at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn has a headstone photograph. Not one. This summer or fall, I am finally making the cemetery visit I have been building toward for decades. I will stay in the Kensington home my great-grandparents Thomas and Mary Dowling purchased in 1905, still in the family after 120 years, and then drive to Holy Cross to find their graves. Calvary Cemetery in Queens is next. The records got me this far. Now it is time to go.
