We picture immigration as a single ocean crossing, but for my Plunkett and Dowling ancestors the real movement happened after they landed, inside a single borough. This post traces one Irish family across four Brooklyn neighborhoods, from the tenement streets of Vinegar Hill to the Red Hook waterfront, up to Prospect Heights, and finally to the Kensington house our family has held for more than a century. Each neighborhood meant something different for their work, their faith, and their survival. Reading these Brooklyn neighborhoods on a map turns census entries and city directories into a story you can walk. It is also my before-the-trip post: on September 8 I fly to Brooklyn to stand on each of these corners myself, and I will report back on what the map could not tell me.
